Among the three kings traveling to Bethlehem, Balthazar, the Nubian King, came the furthest. Known as the 'Emperor of black men,' he journeyed north to meet his companions. Though depicted in fine robes, it's uncertain if he wore them upon arrival.

His journey was long and tiring, leading to tattered clothing. It's possible he brought special attire or was assisted by his fellow Magi. Balthazar, a prince of Africa and King of Saba, is often shown as mature but differed in appearance from Gaspar and Melchior. He was the Ethiopian magus who offered myrrh, an aromatic resin prized across the Holy Land for its deterrence of vermin when dried. It symbolized suffering, making it significant at Christ's birth.

Despite fine gifts from Melchior and Gaspar, Balthazar's myrrh, simple yet meaningful, reportedly awoke the Baby Jesus. Balthazar died at 112, shortly after Melchior, and was honored at his burial by Gaspar, the youngest of the Magi.
